St George's Day Parade 2008
Parade Report – Kevin Lowe:
After the success of the 2007 Saint George’s Day Parade, it was decided that with more time to plan the event for 2008 it would be good to let the children march to the service at St James Church.

Despite all the careful planning the good weather did not turn up as was arranged but this did not seem to dampen the spirits of the children who were all keen and enthusiastic to start the march to St James Church. The Towers Business Park provided us with a safe location for the children to form up at and without this it would not have been possible to have held the march.

At 2:45pm the whistle blew and the order to begin the march was given, escorted by the local Didsbury Community Police officers the children marched with excited looks on their faces. I rather think the children liked the idea of having to make the traffic stop for them and being allowed to walk in the middle of the road. As the parade approached St James Church the Vicar Nick Bundock welcomed the Scouts at the Litch gates and escorted them into the church.

The service was short but very enjoyable as Rev. Nick engaged the children in helping to unravel the mystery behind St George’s battle with the “Dragon”. The march and the service were a great success in that it was enjoyed by all who took part, children & adults. Therefore a great deal of thanks must be given to all those in the community who helped to make it such a success, The Tower Business Park, Didsbury Community Police officers and Rev Nick Bundock and his staff at St James Church.
Wide Game report – Will Carr:
Despite Fletcher Moss being underwater and being more suitable for a swimming event, all 5 sections, leaders and SSAGO decided the ‘show must go on’ and played the district wide game.

With the St Georges day theme continuing, all 3 sections had their own challenge to complete. The Beavers, armed with their own shields, had to go and find the leaders with cut out shapes to decorate their shield. The Cubs had to ‘kit out’ their knight, with armour, a sword, shield and a horse. Again these were hidden by leader in the park. Finally the Scouts had to complete 5 challenges, in order to gain armour for their Knight.
At the end of the game, the Beavers used their shield to firstly cheer on the Cubs, trying to get their knights across a pretend lake. (Unfortunately it wasn’t a pretend lake, but a real one!) So with the Cubs, getting the knights across the lake, the Scouts had to then put their balloon man through a gauntlet, with leaders trying to pop the knight. Let’s say; well done leaders don’t think any of them survived! Well done to the Beavers for all the cheering!

All in all it seemed that everyone had a bit of fun and maybe got slightly wet and muddy in the process! Can I say very big thank-you to Network for helping me prepare for some of the game, the Scouts of 2nd/249th for doing some cutting out, to the explorers / leaders I sent out with bits of paper for the game and the leaders for their words of support.
