Visit to the Museum of Science and Industry

A report of our visit to the Museum of Science and Industry

Saturday 23rd March saw a gathering of 50 Beavers at the Museum of Science and Industry. Six Beaver colonies were represented out of the 10 in our district. Vicky Mike and Cat were the organisers. They had divided the time up into three sections, power, air and experiments. There was a questionnaire for power and air which meant that the Beavers had to find out a little about some of the displays in those areas.

The group I was with was fascinated with pumping up water into a reservoir
using a hand pump to fill it, then pulling a chain to release the water over
a wheel which turned the wheel i.e. water power. They kept wanting to go
back to it and when we were in the experiment section they managed to find
the same experiment again.

They had a great time looking at all the steam trains and engines and
attempting to clamber up the rails to see more.(needless to say there was a
leader on hand to spoil their fun)

In the air and space section there were questions about planes, helicopters,
bikes and cars. The Beavers managed to release some energy as they ran from
exhibit to exhibit to find the answers and in their haste managed to miss
them and of course had to go round again.

The experiment section seemed to be the best of all. The children were free
to to have a go on anything. They were enthralled with the variety of
experiments they could do but sometimes lacked the concentration span needed
to complete one experiment before moving onto the next.

Thanks go to Mike, Vicky and Cat for organising a great day especially as
this was their first effort on behalf of the district.

Watch out Steve there may now be a rush for the experiment badge!
